Social Security Benefits Claims

The Social Security Administration manages two distinctly different Social Security benefits programs for people with disabilities. Brief descriptions of these programs are provided below, and more detailed descriptions are provided at the pages linked to at the left.

Claims for both Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income can be filed at the same time; however, these two programs have very different requirements. For more information, please refer to Social Security Benefits and Social Security Claims Process, or contact Becker Law Office.

The "Disability Report" is critical to the proper development of the issues of a disability case and it is important that it be prepared correctly.

Please review the information we have provided regarding the definition of a disability and the claims process and then contact a Social Security Disability Insurance attorney at the Becker Law Office if you would like assistance in preparing your paperwork.

Social Security Disability Insurance

Social Security Disability Insurance is a benefit administered by the Social Security Administration for people who have a significant work history, but who now find themselves unable to work because of a disability. Social Security Disability Insurance often is abbreviated as SSDI, and sometimes is abbreviated as SS-D.

Supplemental Security Income

Supplemental Security Income is a benefit administered by the Social Security Administration for people who are unable to support themselves due to a disability AND who have very limited income and assets. Supplemental Security Income is usually abbreviated as SSI.

If Your Social Security Claim Is Denied

Many Social Security benefit claims are denied every year. In these circumstances it is vital to use the services of an experienced attorney. The Social Security system is complex. As SSI disability benefits lawyers, we have dedicated ourselves exclusively to this one area of the law. We help hundreds of people every year to bring forward a strong case so they can access available benefits.

Please review our Web site to learn more about how we help clients appeal a denial of their claim for benefits. To learn more about the benefits that may be available to you, please see:

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI): a benefit for people who have a significant work history but who now find themselves unable to work because of a disability.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI): a benefit for people who do NOT have a significant work history, who are unable to support themselves due to a disability AND who have very limited income and assets.

Other Disability-Related Programs

We provide assistance with other disability-related claims as well:

  • Continuing Disability Review (CDR) cases in which the Social Security Administration meets with you to review the extent of your disability. This sometimes results in a decision of overpayment by SSA and you may be asked to pay money back and face a reduction or elimination of benefits.

  • Securing survivorship benefits for children born to an unmarried couple.

  • Katie Beckett cases securing services and resources for children with long-term disabilities or complex medical problems who live at home with families that may not meet income and asset limits for Social Security benefits. (Click here to learn more about Wisconsin’s Katie Beckett program.)

When Benefits Are Denied

Every year, more than 1,000 Wisconsin residents apply for Social Security benefits because of disabilities. The Social Security Administration denies many of those claims. However, when claims are denied initially, it does not automatically mean that you are ineligible for benefits. It may mean that a certain required procedure was not followed, or a particular deadline date was missed, or that the Social Security Administration did not understand the severity of your disability.

Through years of experience, the lawyers at Becker Law Office have developed a very solid and comprehensive understanding of the Social Security system and the claims and appeals process. Those lawyers have guided many people in filing successful claims and helped many people obtain benefits after an initial denial. By contacting the Social Security disability lawyers at Becker Law Office right away, you have the assurance of knowing that you were able to obtain the best results under the circumstances of your individual case.
